In creating 'Colours', can you share insights into the production process, the songwriting journey, and the deeper meaning behind the track?
We were renting this Airbnb near Byron close to where we were playing the Flaming Hearts Festival in April, which also happened to coincide with my birthday. But the Airbnb had this big shed that had been set up to host a jam space, so we were mucking around in there and practicing for our set when our guitar player Tom started playing this chord progression and as usual everyone jumped on and we moved past it. But the chords really stuck with me. I got him to show them to me again a few days later and pretty much within a day after that I had a demo ready. It just snowballed.
The feeling of the song to me was really bright and colourful and the word colours kept just replaying in my head over and over again. When a song gets like that, it’s hard to let go, so I wanted to start recording it straight away. I took it to Kyle who ive been recording an EP with and told him that one song was getting pushed somewhere else and we had to make room for this one.
As with most of the other songs on this forthcoming EP ‘A Sunny Place’, the production process is shared between Kyle and I. I come in with the basis of the track then we’ll both tack on ideas as we record and evolve the track together.
"Colours" is an ode to the vibrant tapestry of hues that paint our world. This song invites listeners on a journey through the kaleidoscope of emotions and experiences that colours evoke in our everyday lives. The track is a testament to my fascination with the way colours breathe life into our existence, stirring emotions and memories, and shaping our perceptions. We’ve attempted to capture the essence of how colours enrich our daily moments.
Your sound has been described as a fusion influenced by artists like Pond, Tame Impala, and Mac DeMarco. In the creation of 'Colours'? Are there specific elements from their music that you consciously incorporate or respond to in your own creative process? Tell us about the moment in the process that you step back and feel that you’ve created a Liquid Contours release?
At the time of writing this I think I was actually listening to a lot of Mac Demarco (more than usual) as well as artists like Babe Rainbow, GUM, Drugdealer and others. I think what you’re listening to naturally seeps in and correlates directly or indirectly into what you write at the time. I think I definitely lean towards certain artists when I’m going for a particular vibe or feeling. Although I do remember at one point saying I wanted that “Mac Demarco-ey” tone on a guitar track.
It seems to be the case that there’s always a point in the writing process where I hit a bit of a road block. And all the construction goes on hold. Once that gets figured out, everything else just clicks and falls into place and then all of a sudden it’s a song. It feels like a Liquid Contours song when I excitedly show my shitty GarageBand iPhone demo to my girlfriend or brother. That’s when we really start cooking with gas.
Within your circle of musical friends and the South East Queensland music scene, could you highlight two other artists or bands that are on the cusp of making a significant impact? What about their music or style do you find compelling or innovative?
Gimmy and Girl and Girl are absolutely killing it right now! Both of these bands not only have just a super unique flair to their music and live presence but are absolutely putting in the hours and working their asses off and it’s paying off. I’m seeing both their names everywhere and am super stoked for them.
They both have really great lyrical content, feels super real and then both their live shows are just so fun and have so much character. They stand out at festivals as a must see for sure
Finally you have been writing overseas with an EP on the horizon, tell us a little bit about your visions for the future?
Yeah so I just recently moved over for a stint in Canada which has put a little halt on the live aspect of the project. However, before I left I was able to record A Double EP split into two parts ‘A Sunny Place’, ‘For Shady People’. ‘A Sunny Place’ will include the featured new single ‘Colours’ as well as reworked versions of older singles ‘Golden Hour’ and ‘Inside you’. The EP will also feature two new unreleased tracks and should be due for release in the next coming couple of months.
‘For Shady People’ is still being polished up but we could be seeing a single from that one very soon as well and it features a few songs that we were playing live a lot earlier last year. So plenty of exciting things to come!
With this mesmerizing backdrop, Colby shares his excitement for the forthcoming EP, 'A Sunny Place,' promising fans an immersive journey into a world where music and visuals intertwine seamlessly. The beautiful and evocative video for 'Colours' is not just a glimpse into the present but a harbinger of Liquid Contours' visionary future, where aesthetics and sound converge. Keep an eye out for the upcoming releases, as Liquid Contours continues to paint the canvas of their musical world.
