Channels Personal Struggles into Music with New Single 'Pray4Peace'
Jay Zayat is an artist who’s never shied away from turning his personal experiences into powerful music. His latest single, "Pray4Peace," is a testament to this, blending deeply personal themes with intricate wordplay and a strong emotional core. Growing up with challenges, Jay has used both music and journaling as a means to transform his upbringing into something positive, offering an emotional outlet that resonates with his audience. In this interview, we explore how his life experiences have shaped his creative process, the inspiration behind "Pray4Peace," and how he continues to carve out his path in the music industry.
Your latest single, "Pray4Peace," delves into some deeply personal themes. Can you share the inspiration behind this song and what it means to you?
Yeah 100%. I used to shy away from speaking about those things but when I started writing the lyrics to this song; the theme of who I am really just came to light itself. For me, music is that emotional outlet or expression so my mind took the front foot and started to just let out whatever it was subconsciously thinking about. As soon as I caught that theme, I became more conscious about what I wanted to say and here we are. It definitely means a lot to me and I'll for sure keep expressing my personal life more and more.
"Pray4Peace" includes a sample from J.Cole's "January 28th." What made you choose this particular sample, and how did it influence the overall vibe of the track?
I found this beat on YouTube one night when I was just looking for instrumentals to use to basically "warm-up" haha. I heard the intro and instantly recognised it because I rinsed 2014 Forest Hills Drive and the sound is so iconic, that I had to bring some story-telling and personal lyrics to the table. I think it made me want to rap about real stuff rather than something commercial so it played a big part in the way I went about it for sure.
Your music often touches on your upbringing and personal struggles. How do these experiences shape your songwriting and creative process?
Oh they shape my process 1000%. I think my upbringing and personal life actually drew me into music more than ever. Like I was saying earlier; music is and has always been my outlet you know? A lot of my early rap music was used as a way to express the things that other people didn't give me a chance to say to them. I write paragraphs and journal a lot, so words have always been my strong point. It changes the way I look at this creative path and lets me be more at ease with the loss of individuals in my life. As sad and depressing as that sounds haha.
How has the support from National radio and your performance at the Melbourne Showgrounds impacted your career and visibility as an artist?
Shout out TripleJ for real though haha. Being featured on radio even across the world is still so surreal to me. Even though it's happened so many times now, it still doesn't lose its value and I don't think it ever will.
Even the Showgrounds show, that was a massive thing for me because it meant that people could see what I was doing and liked it and that's big for an independent artist. It's helped a lot because I have a catalogue of accolades and achievements in my portfolio to show credibility and can use that to further my career. It'll pay off even more as time goes on.
You mentioned intricate wordplay and tongue-in-cheek punchlines in "Pray4Peace." Can you discuss your approach to lyricism and how you develop your unique style?
It's always a hard thing to describe how I make music or how the lyrics come about because it's just a thing that has always been there for me. Like I don't really think too hard about the lyrics but I do tend to break down the punchlines and make sure they hit home like they should. I kind of turn my brain off and let it spill whatever it wants and then analyze where I can throw in something witty and relatable.
Having your first charting track debut at #49 in the Australian iTunes Hip/Hop and Rap charts is a significant achievement. How did it feel to reach this milestone, and what has the journey been like since then?
Thank you so much. It was an amazing thing to see and honestly I actually only found out recently haha. It was October 2023 and I only found out about 3 weeks ago now. As an independent artist who's had no management or publicist etc. It made me feel solidified in my journey. With music in particular, it's not very common to get instant gratification or in some people's case, no gratification so when you put music out (especially when you love it and it's meaningful) and don't see any results, it's disheartening. Having that achievement for me, gave me the gratification and made me know that it's not going unnoticed which made me even more determined to keep pushing.
As an artist based in Melbourne, how does the local music scene influence your work, and what do you hope to achieve next in your musical journey?
Oh the local scene always gives me energy. Especially when I see people performing live, it feeds that fire that I think most creatives can relate to. It's even better when my peers also reach their goals and achievements because it's not only great to see but it's a clear indicator that it can work and it's happening right next to you.
I'm looking to grow my team right now and solidify some people that truly believe in the potential of my artistry. That means management etc. I also am going to play a bunch more shows and keep dropping monthly music because that's super important to me. Might even drop a project soon but we'll see.
