Caught Between Heartbreak and ‘Poison Dreams’
Sydney’s Forever at Midnight return with their powerful new single, ‘Poison Dreams’—a track that channels the chaos, clarity, and catharsis that follow heartbreak. Known for merging post-hardcore grit with pop-punk hooks, the band dives deep into the emotional origins of the song and the creative decisions that shaped it. In this exclusive interview with Tsk Tsk Magazine, they reveal how ‘Poison Dreams’ came to life and what fans can expect when it hits the stage.
What was the inspiration behind Poison Dreams?
Poison Dreams was inspired by that feeling post-breakup when you’re ready to move on, but that person still lingers in your mind. It can feel overwhelming and at times suffocating, like you’re stuck on a ride just waiting to get off.
How did the band approach blending post-hardcore and pop-punk on this track?
Blending these two genres is quite natural for us to do as our band members gravitate towards these styles. We happily combined high-intensity punchy drums and catchy guitar riffs together with big open choruses with emotive melodies.
Which part of the song was the most challenging to write or record?
The bridge was the hardest to record, it was all about the delivery because there’s so much raw emotion and vulnerability within the lyrics of that section. It’s this moment of desperation and defeat; I wanted to transport people into that emotion so it was really important that it was captured in the performance. It definitely took a couple of takes to get it right. – Sidonie (Lead singer)
How do you capture personal experiences in your music while keeping it relatable?
For me, songwriting is like therapy, I almost always write from personal experiences and I feel that’s what makes it relatable. Music can be so incredibly healing; I think being human and being an artist is about sharing experiences. I love the idea that someone might be going through a similar situation and they find comfort, or joy, or whatever it may be within the song. I think that’s what makes people connect so strongly to music: when you can find a bit of yourself within it, it is for me anyway. – Sidonie (Lead singer)
How has the band’s sound evolved since the debut EP Diabolical Girl?
We hope our band sound will be forever evolving. The biggest shift has been with the change up of our line-up—now a 4-piece with both a male and a female vocalist. We are able to write songs with fewer limitations. Sonically, we are planning to continue writing both heavier and poppier tracks, with a touch of synthwave flair.
What part of performing Poison Dreams live are you most excited to bring to the upcoming tour?
We’re most excited to bring the drama and energy to life in a live setting. The music video should give you an idea of what to expect at the live show. We’re super keen to get the crowd involved on this one, so we’ve added something exclusive to the live rendition of the track—you’ll have to come to one of our shows to find out what it is.
