The first release from Eat The Angel, 'Pilot,' was recorded in Fortitude Valley and mastered by Paul Blakey. How was the recording process for this track, and what was it like working with Vagabond Visions and Paul Blakey?
The recording process for my first song was terrifying at first, all my prior experience was alongside my bandmates so going it alone was quite daunting. I was so nervous I just parked and ran into the studio and ended up with a parking fine that day! Having complete control over my ideas going in and an aligned vision with my producer Joe (Vagabond Visions) ended up being such a great experience. Joe's mind works on another level, he has to be one of the best musicians I know and I'm super grateful to him and Paul for making the process so easy and making this project a reality.
'Friends Forever' is your latest single. Can you share the story behind this song and what it represents for you as an artist?
"Friends Forever" plays off between two main themes - a love song in the early stages of a crush, and struggle with medication and illness. Both themes are blurred in the line "if it's a fake high, I don't want it." The idea came about after a conversation about anti-depressants & anti-psychotics, where I asked in true Pisces fashion, "won't I know deep down it is a medicated happiness and then won't I be sadder because I know it's fake?".
Witnessing a lot of my friend's experiences, the modern dating scene is awful. You want to be saved but you don't want to let anyone close enough. The multitude of anxious-avoidants and hook up culture is destroying the romantics left in the world. The line "Play me, I'm yours" illustrates this with denial and a willingness to get hurt. For me, the song is a homage to the last couple of years, "I'm your tour guide cuz I'm brisbane-famous". There's a little shout out to Valley local Ben's Burgers which has been a constant in between gigs and work and photoshoots, always the best place to meet up.
Your music has received airplay in Australia, Europe, the UK, and the USA. How does it feel to have your work resonate with listeners across different parts of the world?
So exciting!! Kinda worried about whoever is listening to the sad ones at odd hours. It is a really beautiful feeling to realise that there are people all over the world going through the same struggles and I hope my music is a small comfort to whoever is listening out there. You can see if someone is listening right now and for a second you feel really connected to the world. I love seeing all the playlist names people come up with - it's hilarious.
What role does collaboration play in your creative process, and are there any other artists you hope to work with in the future?
I've always loved bringing a song to a collaborator and seeing how they interpret it. The entire mood of the song can change! The best part is having someone to bounce those ideas off. I would love to be solely responsible for the Oasis reunion. If that fails, I would hook up a mic to an Ouija board and collab with Jeff Buckley.
Who are some other bands or artists that you believe are on the cusp of greatness, and what makes them stand out to you?
Kitschen Boy are one of my favourite bands at the moment, I hope they get all the recognition they deserve! Their live shows are so fun. On the subject of rising stars in the art world, I think there are so many amazing designers on the cusp of greatness here in Brisbane - I am obsessed with Aanichy and Beefcake, both are true talents. I am actually wearing one of Aanichy's designs in the new music video for Friends Forever so keep an eye out!
Looking ahead, what are your goals for Eat The Angel, and what can fans look forward to in the near future?
Basically world domination. Currently, I am working on an album and just enjoying making art that I like.
