Dive into Stop-Motion Surrealism for ‘Goes Like That’
Cool Sounds unveil the charmingly surreal video for ‘Goes Like That’, the latest single from their upcoming album Party Punisher — OUT NOW via Blossom Rot Records. Created by longtime visual collaborator Rex (aka R_X), the clip takes us into a vibrant stop-motion dreamscape inspired by vintage postcards, beachside memories, and the shifting terrain of identity and imagination. Set in a lush oceanside world populated by beguiling creatures, the video gives ‘Goes Like That’ a new life — full of growth, playfulness, and the offbeat poetry that runs throughout the album.
R_X has worked with you for a while — how would you describe the creative relationship you have with them? How did you collaborate on this one?
R_X and I have quite a strange creative relationship. He is rather elusive, and I never quite know where he is or what he is up to. We often get mistaken for each other and both used to live on Phillip Island. I think this clip is our idealised version of Phillip Island.
‘Party Punisher’ feels like a scrapbook of late nights, weird moments, and deep reflections — what inspired you to frame the album like a ‘road album’?
The album took shape during tours and travels, accumulating moments that felt both humorous and poignant, which made framing it as a 'road album' quite natural. I think traveling provides an ideal space for writing—there are intense bursts of new experiences and sensory overload, combined with plenty of downtime for reflection.
From Uber drivers to Vegas weekends to buying congas — how do you turn those small, funny, or chaotic life moments into something that feels so poetic?
I try and keep lyrics rather casual and conversational, focusing on small humorous or poignant details—quirky conversations, peculiar moments—and letting them unfold naturally. Over time, these collections of seemingly ordinary or chaotic events can become reflections on larger personal themes.
You’ve mentioned artists like The Avalanches and Gorillaz as influences — how did those sounds shape the collage-style production across the album?
The fragmented, textural feel of artists like The Avalanches and Gorillaz inspired us to experiment with building songs differently. For instance, rather than playing and keeping full takes, we’d often cut guitar parts into tiny segments, stitch them back together, and loop them. Then we'd run these loops through various effects to warp and distort the sounds. It was a playful, spontaneous approach that added to the collage-style feeling of the album.
Inspired by The Avalanches and Gorillaz, Party Punisher leans deep into collage-style production and storytelling — capturing road-trip reflections, Uber driver confessions, Vegas chaos, and the purchase of a very important musical instrument (‘And That’s How I Got The Congas’).
